Prescription Diet...
There are an amazing variety of prescription diets available for specific health issues for both canines and felines. Some examples are:

For Arthritis, Hill's diet j/d has much higher levels of chondroprotective and antioxidant nutrients than commercial diets, but especially exciting is the high levels of EPA's (eicosopentanoic acids) which block the inflammatory cascade that causes joint damage. Many owners see a rapid change in their dog's mobility and comfort level.

For Diabetes, (feline) Hill's diet m/d can help change a diabetic cat's metabolism, more closely approximating a cat's normal diet (high protein, low carbohydrate).

For weight loss, Hill's diet r/d has about one half the calories of most commercial diets. This allows most pets to lose weight without being as hungry.
